Serie A Preview – Juve to unseat Inter

By Kevin Koczwara
Inter Milan dominated the world of top-flight soccer last season. The club won its domestic title in Italy, Coppa Italia and the one trophy the club’s fans and ownership had been dreaming of for 60 years, the Champions League. Inter was on top of the world, and when that happens in the world [...]

The Mighty Mourinho

By Kevin Koczwara
Jose Mourinho’s teams win. That’s just what they do. You can’t say they are always the most entertaining side, or the best team on the field. But they score timely goals, come together in tough matches, and win. It’s that simple.
Mourinho won every trophy he could when he was in charge of FC [...]

Roma’s Remarkable Run and MLS Attendance

By Kevin Koczwara
Has anyone else noticed Roma’s remarkable run?
Since November AS Roma has not lost a league match. They have gone 22 matches without a defeat, winning 17 of those matches and drawing only five. Their form has been remarkable and little noticed because they aren’t making noise in any club cup competition like their [...]

Champions League: Liverpool Done? AC Milan Miracle Turn Around?

By Kevin Koczwara
This match week in Champions League play saw some miracle wins, disastrous losses, and some thumping wins from struggling sides. Overall it was just another match week in Champions League play, and just another poor week in fantasy sports for me.
Let’s Start With Liverpool and Lyon…
Liverpool had a remarkable streak broken on Tuesday, [...]

Giants Stumble in Europe

By Kevin Koczwara
Liverpool Lose in Florence
It is a staggering scoreline: Liverpool 0-2 Fiorentina.
Rafa Benetiz cannot explain it. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard cannot understand or defend it. As for the defense, they have looked like Babe in the Big City all year long–they have one clean sheet, a 5-0 win against the struggling attack of [...]

One Sided Affair in Milan

By Kevin Koczwara
The Milan derby always looks to be competitive. Inter Milan and AC Milan are giants of the Italian football world (Serie A), but with AC’s recent financial struggles, the club has been forced to sell their star player and former world footballer of the year, Kaka. His replacement was sitting in the wings, [...]

£136 Million Goes a Long Way

136 million pounds ($224 million at last conversion-rate check)

Just let that figure sink in for a second.

With transfer fees reaching insane heights and rumors swirling faster than I can keep up with, the sheer amount of cash Real Madrid has thrown at two players has somewhat failed to register with many football fans. The term “World Record Transfer” may carry some weight with it, but the extent to which Madrid is overpaying for talent borders on financial insanity. With Karim Benzema on the way for a reported £29.7m the club is well on its way to spending over £200m in one summer.

Are two players really worth £136m? Well in order to analyze this you have to analyze how far that hefty sum can really go.

With this in mind, I set out to see just how far you can “stretch” £136m in modern football. My task was fairly simple: create a full lineup of 11 players (1 Keeper, 4 Defenders, 4 Midfielders and 2 Strikers) who transferred during the last three years (2007 and on) for less than Real Madrid paid for just Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. Here are the results, and I think you will be amazed with how formidable of a lineup I have fielded. All transfer figures are the closest approximation reported by mainstream media sources I could find.

Pirlo Perfect Fit for New-Look Blues

Moments following Chelsea’s painful and oh-so-sudden loss to eventual champions Barcelona in the semifinals of the Champions League, Blues owner Roman Abramovich marched across the Stamford Bridge pitch. It didn’t take an expert in body language to see the Russian billionaire was perturbed.
