Injuries Plaguing World Cup Hopefuls and EPL Top Teams

By Kevin Koczwara
There is no substitute for depth in professional soccer. Skill can overcome some hard-ache, and hard-work can definitely make up for a lack of skill, but nothing can make up for a deep bench in the long grueling seasons of soccer. Many teams in the English Premier league are seeing some of their [...]

By Kevin Koczwara
I know I have been away for a long time and I am sorry for that. I was busy, very busy, with a job I had in the month of December. But, I am back and ready to go. So let’s start this column off with predictions for Group F.
Group F is a [...]

The Only Derby: Liverpool vs United

By Kevin Koczwara
Manchester United head to Anfield this weekend to hopefully put and end to Liverpool’s title chances. A win for United would be the knockout punch for Liverpool, putting them down for the count with little to no chance at winning The English Premier League for the first time in 20 years.
A Liverpool loss [...]

Giants Stumble in Europe

Liverpool Lose in Florence
It is a staggering scoreline: Liverpool 0-2 Fiorentina.
Rafa Benetiz cannot explain it. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard cannot understand or defend it. As for the defense, they have looked like Babe in the Big City all year long–they have one clean sheet, a 5-0 win against the struggling attack of [...]

£136 Million Goes a Long Way

136 million pounds ($224 million at last conversion-rate check)

Just let that figure sink in for a second.

With transfer fees reaching insane heights and rumors swirling faster than I can keep up with, the sheer amount of cash Real Madrid has thrown at two players has somewhat failed to register with many football fans. The term “World Record Transfer” may carry some weight with it, but the extent to which Madrid is overpaying for talent borders on financial insanity. With Karim Benzema on the way for a reported £29.7m the club is well on its way to spending over £200m in one summer.

Are two players really worth £136m? Well in order to analyze this you have to analyze how far that hefty sum can really go.

With this in mind, I set out to see just how far you can “stretch” £136m in modern football. My task was fairly simple: create a full lineup of 11 players (1 Keeper, 4 Defenders, 4 Midfielders and 2 Strikers) who transferred during the last three years (2007 and on) for less than Real Madrid paid for just Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. Here are the results, and I think you will be amazed with how formidable of a lineup I have fielded. All transfer figures are the closest approximation reported by mainstream media sources I could find.
